PADMASHREE LATE DR B S CHAUBEY

Padmashree Late Dr B S Chaubey

LATE PADMASHREE DR BALSWARUP CHAUBEY was an Indian nephrologist and medical academic, A Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London, Dr Chaubey was the retired dean of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Nagpur and had served as the secretary of the Maharashtra State Medical Teachers Association.

Born on 2 June 1934 at Washim in the western Indian state of Maharashtra to Kesar and Bal Mukund Chaubey, a police officer, Dr B S Chaubey did his schooling at English High School, Nagpur and graduated in medicine from the Government Medical College, Nagpur

After specializing in Nephrology, he started his career at his alma mater as a lecturer and rose in ranks to become the Dean of the Department of Medicine of the college as well as Nagpur University in 1982, holding positions as a reader (1963–68), as an associate professor (1968–72), and as a professor and the head of the department (1972–82). He superannuated from the institution in 1992.

The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2009, for his contributions to Medicine.

He was a teacher who would be remembered with respect, love and admiration not just from his students and medical fraternity but by thousands of poor families whom he treated free after his retirement.

Though known in his fraternity as the best physician the city has produced till date, he always preferred to be known as a teacher.

He was a good administrator which he proved in various capacities: Dean of GMCH, Dean of Medicine faculty of Nagpur University and Executive council and academic Council member.

He along with Dr Vikram Marwah were the first president and secretary of the Maharashtra state medical teachers association. Both were instrumental in formation of directorate of medical education and research.

He continued to treat patients even a couple of months before falling ill. In 40 years that he was as a teacher he taught more than 8,000 students.

 

HIS CONTRIBUTION TO HEALTH SERVICES AND RESEARCH IN CENTRAL INDIA ESPECIALLY NAGPUR:

  1. He started his career in the department of medicine in GMCH and retired as the Dean of GMCH.

  2. He was a gold medallist all throughout his career including MBBS all subjects and MD

  3. He was a member of Royal College of physicians and later become the fellow of royal college of physicians. Further he was so active in this college he was later named as the advisor of south east asia.

  4. In 1970, Late Padmashree Dr B S Chaubey started the first ever haemodialysis unit for free dialysis for poor patients at GMCH Nagpur.

  5. He constructed the state of art Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at GMC Nagpur for the poor.

  6. The Super speciality unit of GMCH was planned and constructed according to his planning and was instrumental in the making.

  7. GMCH Nagpur was the only place doing Free Kidney Transplants (in the state) for the poor.

  8. He started various free OPDs for poor patients including Sickle cell disease, kidney diseases, respiratory diseases and diabetes.

  9. He was instrumental in starting pulmonary function test for free in GMCH Nagpur

  10.  After retirement he started a charitable OPD for all poor patients at home from the city and regions such as Madhya Pradesh, Chhatisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Delhi.

  11.  All poor patients were given money for all investigations including CT Scan from his personal accounts.

  12.  Patients who could not even afford medications were given medicines completely free of cost and did not charge them any consultation fees.

  13.  He had a special interest in research in medicine and with his own efforts brought NAGPUR on the research world map by bringing Dr Rockefeller Foundation of USA to GMCH Nagpur with which numerous research projects were done due to the financial help received by the foundation.
